The vacuum cleaner is a cleaning device equipped with a fan motor that creates a vacuum capable of sucking up dust and other particles. Through a filter or a cyclone, the sucked air is purified from the dust particles that are accumulated in a special container.
The vacuum cleaner was invented between 1865 and 1876 in the United States. The first device developed by a Chicago inventor.
The first two electric vacuum cleaners appeared almost simultaneously but were conceived by two different inventors.
Around 1901 Hubert Cecil Booth marveled that an apparatus was used for cleaning the trains which, blowing air, removed dust and dirt. He devised a more manageable appliance that was able to suck up the dust.
The other inventor was the American James Murray Spangler, a gatekeeper from Canton, Ohio. Using a fan, a box, and a pillow he built a vacuum cleaner. Together with the suction force the device also used a rotating brush. He patented the invention in 1908 and sold the patent to his cousin’s company, the “Hoover Harness and Leather Goods Factory”.
In England, the term Hoover is closely associated with the vacuum cleaner so as to become synonymous with it, in current use “doing the hoovering” is the definition used for the operation of passing the vacuum cleaner.
For many years the vacuum cleaner remained a luxury item after the Second World War usage is increased in middle-class families.
Types of vacuum cleaners
For home use, there are different types of vacuum cleaners.
Vacuum Cleaner with Bin:
These types of bin are Cylindrical in shape, the motor is screwed into the upper part, protected by a paper filter, and the (metal) cylinder that is used to contain the dust. There are models that also suck in liquids. Some have two vents, one that sucks in and the other that blows air, so you can also remove dust by blowing it off, not just sucking it in.
Vacuum Cleaner with Electric broom:
It consists of a central body in which the motor, the filter, and the dust bag are located, and from which a rigid tube comes out to which a brush is fixed, which can be of various types, for various surfaces. Portable Vacuum Cleaner
These are small; light battery-operated vacuum cleaners to be held with one hand. They are used for light and fast jobs. The advantages are lightness, the possibility of using them even away from a power outlet (for example in the car) and low cost. Vacuum Cleaner for Carpet:
The carpet cleaner is a type of specialized vacuum cleaner for carpets and rugs.
The operation takes place by means of a bristle and rotating cylindrical brush which, in contact with the textile surface, rubs and consequently lifts the dust from the weft, capturing it by means of a suction motor equipped with a fan and storing it in a removable bag.
There are also bagless models on the market that store the dust in an empty container, while the fine particles are retained by some filters.
Vacuum Cleaner for electronic equipment:
The USB vacuum cleaner, a mini vacuum cleaner that can be connected to a computer or a USB power supply, is available for cleaning electronic equipment. Useful for cleaning dust from electronic equipment such as computers, keyboards, cameras and can also be used to clean the desk. This type of vacuum cleaner is also equipped with accessories for vacuuming the dust present under the buttons of the keyboards.
In the early months of 2000 several companies developed vacuum cleaner robots capable of moving independently on the floor of a furnished room. Usually, they are able to get around obstacles and to return independently to their base for recharging batteries.
In recent years, appliances have also been created that combines the function of a vacuum cleaner with that of a boiler, blowing steam to clean and vacuuming wet dirt.
Cyclone vacuum cleaner
The cyclone suction mode (or with cyclone technology) is the most modern technology used in bagless suction. The system works by separating the air dust inside the so-called “cyclonic box”, thanks to the centrifugal force generated by an air cyclone produced inside the box itself. The first bagless systems called “filter-based” due to the absence of an air vortex inside the dust collection box, manage to separate only a part of the dust from the air (<50%) and consequently there is a great deal concentration of dust on the filter, which appears large and visible inside the box.
The cyclone vacuum cleaner was invented and patented by James Dyson after approximately 5,127 prototypes.
Centralized vacuum cleaners:
The centralized aspiration systems are composed of a central aspiration usually located in a service room of the house and from which branch pipes are hidden in the walls that reach all the rooms of the house. For use, simply attach a flexible tube with a handle and brush to the special suction sockets on the wall.
A peculiar characteristic of this system is maximum silence since the central vacuum unit is installed in a remote service room. This allows you to use the system at any time. However, this type of solution is only applicable in new homes or under renovation as the plant engineering part made of 50 mm diameter pipes must be inserted under the floor or in the walls. As an indication, a suction outlet is provided every 30 square meters.
